March Mood Boards

My oh my where did February go?! It’s been a busy busy month for me. In the beginning of the month, I had a friend visit. The next week, I was frantically pulling together my Valentines shoot (I swear, I tried to plan back in early January and had the hardest time coordinating with everyone!). Last weekend I had the Eastern-Atlantic Student Forum, where I presented a poster on my current research. And this week, I had a progress meeting with my thesis committee, basically presenting everything I’ve done since my qualifying exam. Of course that’s not mentioning my daily lab work or my new partnership with Goli Nutrition (use code knockout_kitten for a discount on your order!) or the content I made to feature small women owned businesses leading up to Valentine's!
Okay okay enough complaining on my end, let’s talk about these mood boards. March will be the start of spring so I wanted to do some boards with this in mind. Because it’s still winter in a lot of regions, I curated these boards to be outdoor, studio, and home “specific”. You can find all of the boards here.

Up first we have Secret Garden. This board is all about the flowers. I really loved the elegance of all of these shots; they give a fairy-tale, princessy vibe. Most of these feature lighter colored gowns, which seem to match with the flowers and have a nice contrast against the greenery. You’ll want a lighter material for the dress, possibly featuring tulle or lace. If you’re not looking to spend a fortune on a dress, Goodwill is a great option, or Shein if you’re not interested in pre-owned clothing. Cherry blossoms typically bloom at the end of March if you’re lucky enough to live somewhere with those trees. Live in a more green area? No problem! Either order fake flowers and place them in the grass to lay in or wear a bold floral or textured dress.

Next is Mod March. Although this board isn’t overtly springy, it is very colorful and perfect for the studio. The mod style is a true staple of 1960s fashion. Miniskirts and short shift dresses in bold colors and geometric shapes or black and white with optical patterns. Colorful tights were in, along with flats and knee high boots. I’m definitely not an expert on mod fashion, but I am a lover of vintage and retro styles. Consider a color block outfit. Keep accessories simple and give your hair a little volume. And don’t forget the iconic Twiggy eyeliner!

Finally is Springtime Soak. The title could use a little work but you get the jist. This is an inspo board for shooting at home in the bathtub. Milk baths are a little overdone in my opinion, but if you add a little color to water, it’s much more interesting. Even without any coloring, you can get some really beautiful shots. I LOVE what Nicole York did with this “Magical Forest Pond” shoot. Stock up on fake flowers and plants from Michaels (they always have sales!), Dollar tree (not as realistic but very affordable), or even Amazon. For wardrobe, I would recommend a solid neutral colored swimsuit/bodysuit or dress or if you’re comfortable, nude. Make sure to do any fully submerged shots last as to limit your risk of ruining your makeup!

Which board is your favorite? Which one will you be trying for next March shoot?
