September Mood Boards

I’ve been very blessed to take the majority of August off. I spent a week in Milwaukee with my family and now two weeks in the Northeast with Sam and his family. We’re getting so well-deserved rest and relaxation, and I have loved every second of exploring! I meant to have everything for blogs up and ready to go in my absence but obviously that wasn’t the case, and our WiFi in Maine was non-existent. I’m a day late to getting this up, but nevertheless, we have a new month to look forward to and more art to create.

“Back to school, back to school, to prove to daddy I’m not a fool.” (Who can tell me what movie that’s from?) Yes, it’s the Back to School season already -- although grad school never really breaks -- and I wanted to play on that theme for some of these mood boards. Here comes the boards. Hello boards. Welcome

Study Bug is a moody library board, partially inspired by dark academia fashion. I love the neutral shades, layering of pieces and the addition of plaid. Of course, glasses are a fun accessory to add in. Obviously a library would be a great spot to shoot this style, but alternatively, a museum, used bookstore, or cafe are great options too if you like to shoot on location. Keep in mind that not all places are happy to have photographers snapping away, so keep your equipment light. Libraries have a lot of quiet nooks to shoot, not to mention all of the books for easy props. I also threw a chess photo in this board because The Queen’s Gambit was so good and I love the dark intellectual look of the shot.

Keepin’ Score is a fun and sporty board. I didn’t want to commit to one sport over another, but it is primarily tennis and basketball inspired shots. I think this is mostly because these courts are the easiest to access and pose on; soccer or football fields may be uneven or muddy. A track or bleachers could be fun as well. You’ll notice that I tried to incorporate as much color as possible into my selections. It’s a nice contrast to Study Bug, and adds to the playful mood. I think there’s three main choices for styling -- athletic wear, street wear, or high fashion. Movement and props will add dynamic aspects to the shot. Don’t be afraid to play with poses, angles and depth! And bring some wet wipes to clean off after touching all of the dirty courts and equipment!

Work of Art is probably my loosest mood board. I say that because the mood is significantly less cohesive than others I have made. This board is all about wild edits. My friend Lauren inspired me by suggesting mixed subjects which led me to mixed media. I love the idea of working with multiple materials to create a final product, like a collage in art class. Allie’s art page is actually a great example of this. If you have minimal editing skills like me, PicsArt is the best app to do this with. They have the replay option where you can apply other artist’s edits to your image. It’s a great starting point if you don’t know what or how to do a particular edit.

Which board is your favorite? If you’re inspired by any of my mood boards, I would love to see the final product! Use my hashtag #KittensKoncepts to share your shots with me!
